  • Small Group Open Events October 2021

Due to Devon being in a Covid Enhanced Response Area until 4th October, we have taken the difficult decision to change the way we conduct our open events by replacing the College Open Evening on Tuesday 21st September with a wide range of smaller and more personal events. We are very keen to meet prospective parents/carers and pupils and are delighted to be able to offer a ‘package’ of Covid-safe opportunities to help inform your choice of secondary school for September 2022.
Small group tours – wide range of dates available
We are offering small group tours with our Executive Headteacher Michael Johnson, Deputy Executive Headteacher Neil Payne and SENDCO Laura Mackie. After school for those who may not be able to visit in working hours and morning tours for those who wish to visit during a normal school day.  Being able to see the school ‘in action’ provides an excellent window into what we offer here at Chulmleigh College, and with the tours being led by our Senior Leadership Team in a small group environment, you will have ample opportunities to ask any questions you may have.
We are offering a wide range of dates for these tours, please click on the links below to book.

Year Six Academy

Year Six Academy

Year 6 is a crucial year for primary school pupils. It is the year they take their SATs, and the year they prepare to make the move from primary to secondary education. This transition is an exciting time, but for both pupils and parents it can also be somewhat daunting. The Year 6 Academy is our answer to these challenges, and we are very proud of what the Academy is achieving.

The Academy enables pupils from our Trust primary schools to complete their education in an environment in which their learning is completely focussed on this important year, with outstanding teaching tailored to each individual child.

Teaching in Year 6 Academy looks a little different from the rest of the school, because the children begin to experience learning with subject specialist teachers, in different groups, rather than always being with their class teacher. In addition to this, some lessons will be taught by staff from the College.  Lunch is eaten in the College canteen, at a slightly earlier time than College pupils, which gives further insight into what they will experience once they move into Year 7.  Other facilities shared with the College include dance/drama spaces, sporting facilities and the library. This promotes a transition to secondary school that is smooth, seamless, and stress-free.

College staff report that the children who have already passed through our Year 6 Academy quickly settle into the expectations of secondary school, and are often used as mentors for other children who are less familiar with the College.

This prior knowledge of the College layout, getting to know the staff, and the understanding of the expectations of College life, all ensure that what for some children can seem like a huge leap from primary to secondary education, is in fact only a small step.
